What the IRS says this notice is about

The notice informs taxpayers about their potential eligibility for the Saver’s Match, a new Federal government matching contribution of up to 50% of what they contribute to their retirement account for each tax year. The notice was issued to taxpayers who claimed the Saver’s Credit on their 2025 tax return or whose 2025 income was otherwise in the range of Saver’s Match eligibility.

Starting in 2027, the Saver’s Match replaces the Saver’s Credit for contributions made to retirement plans or IRAs. You could get up to $1,000 each year added directly to your retirement account.

Is this letter really from the IRS?

The IRS writes first by mail. A real letter shows a notice or letter number, your name and part of your tax ID number. The IRS does not ask for payment by gift card, crypto or wire transfer. If in doubt, sign in to your IRS online account, where many notices are listed.
