What the IRS says this notice is about

We need your help in locating a taxpayer you may know.

Your deadline

Answer by the date printed on your notice. If there is no date, answer as soon as you can, and call the number on the notice if you need more time.

What to check before you answer

Is this letter really from the IRS?

The IRS writes first by mail. A real letter shows a notice or letter number, your name and part of your tax ID number. The IRS does not ask for payment by gift card, crypto or wire transfer. If in doubt, sign in to your IRS online account, where many notices are listed.

You may want to

Complete Form 15106, Request for Updated Taxpayer Information, included with your notice and return it using the envelope provided. If you prefer to speak with us, you can call the number on your notice. Please respond either by mail or phone within 10 days from the date of your notice.

What you need to know

We’re required by law to maintain a list of third-party contacts. In some cases, we’re required to provide this to the individual the information you provided is related to. If you don’t want to be on this list, call us at the phone number on your notice.
